What is spyware and adware?
Spyware programs make money for their publishers by reporting your Internet travels and sending you advertisements. Some also report your name, e-mail address, and other personal information. CNET calls any program designed to deliver ads or to get marketing information adware. Spyware is a subset of adware, focused on reporting personal information. Microsoft has a beta version called Windows Defender or you can check out download.com's spyware killer page. Three of the top ones are free; choose one to download. Spyware and Adware can slow down your computer! |
| Pop-up Blockers | We have all seen those annoying pop ups while we are surfing the net. If you have Windows XP with Service pack 2 and you use the latest version of Windows Explorer or Firefox then you already have a pop-up blocker. | Virus Protection | There are many viruses out there that can really harm your computer. If you use the internet and email your are vulnerable to virus and if you are infected you can infect other's computers. I recommend buying McAfee, which around $50 dollars, or Norton which is also around $50, and installing it. You can buy them at Wal-Mart, Office Depot, Target or any Electronic store or purchase online and download it. Once you install it make sure you update it over the internet so it will have the most current .dat file (virus list) to protect your computer. *update* McAfee has released Internet Security sweet 2007, For home PC users I recommend the 8 in 1 pack which you can for around $40 at Target. The 8 in 1 includes Virus Protection, Spyware blocker, Hacker protection, Parental control, Spam & Email Scam protector, backup utility, and a Performance improver. |
